Ablyss

In 2003, our founding partners, a care home owner and two software developers, identified a lack of care-focused software available on the market. Although care home systems were available for accounts and business administration, there was nothing designed around care records, created specifically for managers and care staff and so Ablyss Systems was born.


With the support of both her business partners, and her extensive experience of creating systems from the ground up, Sally White spearheaded the creation process of a Care Management System tailored for the needs of any care home; a mammoth task given the variety and greatly differing needs of the UK residential care home market.

Fixxon

Ensuring residents’ items are correctly returned to their rightful owners is vital for comfort and dignity. Despite this, lost property is reported to be the biggest cause for complaint in many care homes.
Traditionally residents in care homes would have their clothes labelled by their families, however, the commonly used marker pen washes off very quickly in a care home laundry, and sew-in/iron-on labels are very time consuming to attach.
Our solution is the Fixxon button labelling system; a brilliantly efficient way of identifying clothing.
Due to our unique attachment method, the button labels are smooth, comfortable and discreet on all items of clothing (even socks!).
The resident’s room number or name is clearly laser-etched onto the buttons, ensuring the marking withstands the chemicals and high temperatures encountered in a care home laundry system.
The buttons can be colour-coded to match different areas or floors of the care home, and are securely attached to garments using the specially designed tools.
The result is happy residents knowing that their clothes will be safely returned to them, and an efficient in-house laundry system.

Torbay and South Devon NHS Trust

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is an integrated organisation providing acute health care services from Torbay Hospital, community health services and adult social care.

The Wayback (www.thewaybackvr.com) is a virtual reality film series designed to trigger memories and spark conversations for those living with dementia, their carers and loved ones. The 360-degree films immerse the viewer in incredibly detailed, recreated, positive moments from the past – which evoke the feelings that went with them – in order to create positive connections and conversations in the present. Using simple technology, our ambition is to share these films with as many people living with dementia as possible, their carers and families, helping them to remain connected to the people around them and maintaining their identity.

The Wayback films are unlike any other kind of virtual reality film. Each one is the product of countless hours of research and ‘memory sessions’ in care homes. This groundwork ensures that every scene is filled with thousands of details that will trigger different memories and emotions for everyone old enough to have been there.

We believe VR technology can help address the quality of life and coping challenges that this patient population faces. Reminiscence is already widely used for people living with dementia and we believe The Wayback will be welcomed as another vital tool. The user technology is very simple incorporating a handheld smart phone and a simple cardboard VR viewer. The Wayback provides a memory bank of moments through the decades, evocatively recreated, detailing shared positive moments from the past.

Merlin MS Centre

The Merlin MS Centre is an independent charity located in mid-Cornwall. The purpose-built Centre provides a range of support and therapies predominantly for people whose lives are affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) but also for those with other neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s, Stroke, ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

 MS is a chronic condition that affects the central nervous system. Symptoms include loss of mobility, visual impairment, decreased cognitive function, incontinence, and difficulties with speech or swallowing.

People who attend the Centre can access a range of therapies including individual and group physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, occupational and exercise therapy; podiatry; oxygen therapy (breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurised environment); health and well-being therapies, such as holistic massage, reflexology and Bowen. These can help people better manage their symptoms; improve mobility, strength, flexibility, and circulation; improve sleep patterns; help with pain management and reduce stress and anxiety.

The Centre also offers counselling, carer support, advice and information. All clients are registered and are given a health assessment before therapies are undertaken, but they do not need to be referred by a health professional to access the Centre. A free mini-bus service, suitable for wheelchair users, is available for clients if they have no other means to access the Centre.

A day respite service, which can enable individuals to gain new skills; improve social interaction and self-confidence; and reduce depression and isolation, is also provided. Clients have a structured day of activities which includes exercises, workshops, choice of therapies, lunch and rest. Importantly, it enables carers to have a break from their caring role.

The charity receives no Government funding and therefore derives its income, currently nearly £600,000 a year, from fundraising activities in the community; hiring of the Centre’s conference and therapy rooms to external clients, plus income from grant making trusts.

Skin Clear Clinic & Consultancy 

I have worked in the community for 18 years as a health care assistant, district nurse, and tissue viability specialist nurse. As a tissue viability nurse specialist, I have enhanced wound care management and treatment skills working clinically for over 18 years in the NHS. My work has led me to work as a specialist advisor for tissue viability to the CQC and as a legal expert witness.

 

I started researching the prevention of pressure ulcers in the community and long-term care settings in 2012 as part of my dissertation research for my specialist tissue viability degree.

 

I have worked intensively within the community and nursing homes, working closely with multi-disciplinary agencies, local authorities, CCGs, and care providers.

 

I have dedicated my work to raising awareness of pressure ulcer prevention and influencing change of cultures in practice in the community and long-term care settings across all nursing and non-medical disciplines. My work has made me proficient in quality improvement methodologies, and sustainable implantation, benchmarked to CQUINS and KPIs.

 

I have published my work and have won the prestigious quality improvement award by the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP). In June 2017, I was nominated to attend a Royal Garden Party by the Director of Nursing at NHS Improvement in recognition of my work in the nursing profession.

 

I am passionate about bringing my knowledge and training to care settings to empower carers to become prevention champions. I have implemented various quality improvement and sustainability plan models and joint commissioning improvement business plans for joint local authority and NHS trust organisations to incorporate the 5-year forward, STPs, and 10-year plan. This involved working closely with care homes and domiciliary care home providers and CCGs.

 

I have worked with Imperial College London Academic and Science Health Partners (ASHN) where I redesigned and launched the gold standard SSKIN bundle for use in long term care settings. I helped design and launch the pressure ulcer safeguarding decision tool which is now used nationally as part of the Department of Health serious incident policy. I have designed and written multiple preventions of pressure ulcer internationally.

 

For the last 2 years, I have been travelling the UK and delivering QI operational consultancy and clinical training.
